Crash Course 101 is a practical guide

Attorney Edward C. Harper wrote this guide for anyone navigating the confusion, stress, and uncertainty that follows a motor vehicle collision. Drawing on more than three decades of representing injured clients, Ed walks you through exactly what to do and what to avoid after a collision. If you are reading this to be prepared, or because a crash already happened and the calls have started, the book gives you a clear roadmap through a process that can otherwise feel overwhelming.

What's Inside

The chapters follow the same path a claim does, starting at the scene and ending with settlement or, if it comes to that, trial.

FIRST STEPS
What to do (and what not to do) at the crash site and in the days that follow
DETERMNING FAULT
Understanding fault, negligence, and who is responsible
WHO IS COVERED
Rights and responsibilities for passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians
THE ADJUSTERS
How insurance coverage actually works, and how to deal with adjusters
PROTECT YOUR CLAIM
Common mistakes that quietly weaken a claim
DAMAGES
Understanding damages: medical costs, lost wages, and non-economic losses
SETTLEMENT & TRIAL
What to expect during settlement negotiations and, if needed, trial
TERMINOLOGY
A plain-language glossary of legal terms used in personal injury cases

Why Read It

Legal language is one more burden at a moment when you already have plenty. Crash Course 101 is written in accessible, everyday language, and it breaks down the concepts that tend to feel intimidating: negligence, coverage, damages, and the terms adjusters use as if everyone already knows them. When a word needs defining, the glossary at the back defines it in plain English.

Ed's goal is simple. He wants you to understand the process and make informed decisions when it matters most, whether you eventually hire a lawyer or handle things on your own. The book is also written to be useful to the people on the other side of the desk. Paralegals, newer attorneys, and experienced personal injury lawyers have found it worth keeping within reach, which is a fair measure of how carefully the material is put together.

This is a genuinely valuable resource, practical, clear, and built for real-world use. Any paralegal, newer attorney, or personal injury lawyer will benefit from an in-depth read, and it's the kind of reference I will always pull back off the shelf. For the right client, someone who wants to understand the process and the why behind decisions, it's a must-read.
